A Simple Guide to the $1,000 Government Savings Grant for Children
A Simple Guide to the $1,000 Government Savings Grant for Children
Saving money for your child’s future can feel overwhelming. To make it easier and help families build long-term wealth, a new federal pilot program has introduced Trump Accounts (officially known as IRC §530A IRAs).
These are special investment accounts meant for American children under 18. To encourage parents to start saving early, the government is even offering a one-time $1,000 cash bonus to kickstart eligible children’s savings.
Here is a simple, plain-English breakdown of who qualifies for this free money and exactly how to sign up.
The $1,000 Free Government Deposit: Who Can Get It?
The government’s $1,000 starter grant is a pilot program designed for newborns and young children. To get this free cash deposit, your child must meet three basic rules:
- The Birth Window: Your child must be born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028.
- Citizenship: The child must be a legal U.S. citizen.
- Identification: The child must have a valid Social Security Number (SSN).
Important Note: This money is not given out automatically when your baby is born. You, as the parent or legal guardian, must actively open the account and check a box to claim the $1,000. You can claim this bonus at any time before the calendar year your child turns 18.
What if my child was born before 2025?
If your child was born before 2025, don’t worry—they can still have a Trump Account! They will still get all the excellent tax benefits, and employers or family members can still contribute to it. The only downside is that they simply will not qualify for the initial $1,000 free government grant.
How and When to Sign Up Your Child
The official enrollment portal opened on July 4, 2026. The federal government has made the application process entirely digital so you can complete it online from home.
Follow these five simple steps to register your child and claim their funds:
Step 1: Gather Your Information
Before you open the website, make sure you have the following details ready. You will need:
- Your own legal ID and Social Security Number.
- Your child’s legal name, date of birth, current address, and Social Security Number.
- A verified ID.me account. This is the secure identity verification system used by the IRS and other official government websites.
Step 2: Choose Your Website & Apply
There are two official ways to access the registration system online. Click one of the options below to begin your application:
Step 3: Fill Out the Digital Form
Once you log in securely using your ID.me account, you will fill out a short digital form called IRS Form 4547 (Election for the Establishment of a Trump Account).
This form asks for basic information about you and your child. Crucial step: If your child was born between 2025 and 2028, make sure you check the specific box on this form to claim the $1,000 U.S. Treasury pilot grant.
Step 4: Wait for Verification
The government system will check its records to make sure your child doesn’t already have an account, as the law only allows one account per child. The backend system is run through a partnership with BNY and Robinhood. Once the system verifies your child’s information, you will receive an official activation email.
Step 5: Link Your Bank and Start Saving
After the account is fully activated, you can link your personal bank account to it. From there, you can choose how you want to save. You can make one-time deposits whenever you have extra cash, set up an automatic monthly transfer, or even arrange for direct deductions from your paycheck if your employer offers a matching program.
